CURATORS NOTE

site |sʌɪt| noun
1 the place where something is, was, or will be located
2 a place where something has happened

As documentarians of Aotearoa, New Zealand, the artists in this exhibition have all made work in response to the social and cultural history embedded within the land.

Their work is linked by how each photograph reveals something that is site specific, embodies its own narrative and divulges something of the photographers’ position as tangata titiri (people of the treaty, non Māori citizens of New Zealand). Shot in regions around the country that have gone through various phases of significant transition, and continue to do so, this exhibition questions our understanding of place and memory.
